Meet our Board of Directors:
Nancy Brex, Co-Vice President
Nancy is Barrington born and raised! She retired from teaching in 2015 and enjoys reading, gardening, and swimming. Favorite recent reads include Washington Black and Where the Crawdads Sing.
Janine Connelly, President
Janine has lived in Barrington since 2010, and while she was an English major in college, she is now a Budget Director at the Rhode Island School of Design. She’ll read almost any genre, but especially enjoys historical fiction, microhistories, and magical realism. Janine recommends anything by Alice Hoffman, Madeleine L’Engle, Neil Gaiman, or Ray Bradbury. Recent favorites include Underground Railroad, Ten Thousand Doors of January, The Immortalists.
Bill Dwyer, Co-Vice President
Bill joined the Board about 15 years ago, and he is also a volunteer for the RI Audubon Society and Save the Bay. In addition to helping raise his grandson, Bill is an accomplished photographer, is active in his church, and is a PADI SCUBA Divemaster! Since Bill has a very technical job, he likes escapism for his recreational reading. Bill recommends Terry Goodkind. RA Salvatore, Terry Brooks, Ryk Brown.
Magi retired to Barrington in 2013, where she is also a volunteer at the Bay Spring Community Center. Her book recommendations include Rising, by Elizabeth Bush; The Murmur of Bees, When I was White, Love Song, and When I’m Gone.
Alvin joined the Peace Corps after college, and served for five and a half years in the Philippines. He received the 2019 Award for Empowerment for Outstanding International Community Service to the Filipino-American Community, founded the Hower-Bates Library Network, and recently published a memoir No Greater Service – A Peace Corps Photo Memoir (Philippines 1969-1974).
Prima lived in Florida for 32 years, but moved north to be closer to her grandchildren. She reads a lot of Peace Corps volunteer memoirs, and enjoyed The Ponds of Kalambayi by Mike Tidwell, and Living Poor by Moritz Thomsen.
Cindy Pierce, Secretary
Janet recently retired from the Barrington Public Library after 30 years of service. She’s currently reading Monogamy, about a Cambridge couple’s marriage and its aftermath. Janet recommends Overstory by Richard Powers; Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout; Department of Speculation by Jenny Ofill; The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante.
Chuck Van Sluyter, Treasurer
Chuck has lived in Barrington for 16 years, and has been on the Board for five. Now retired, he enjoys fishing, travel, photography, and golf. Recent favorite reads include Albion’s Seed, Mayflower, Democracy in Chains, and Love in the Time of Cholera.
Joyce Van Sluyter
Joyce has lived in Barrington for 16 years, and has been on the Board for 15. She enjoys gardening, walking the beach, visiting her children in Colorado and Australia, and reading, of course! Recent reads include What We Carry (memoir), You’re Doing Great! (humor), and The Lost Girls of Paris and Fast Girls (historical fiction).

Publicity and Community Relations
Help us execute our mission: supporting our library through fundraising and membership!
The volunteer(s) in this position will be responsible for the following areas. Additional volunteers and other Board members may be recruited to help execute the details of each project. Two volunteers may be selected to join the Board and share these responsibilities.
- Write the monthly newsletter, which is now online and goes to members but also occasionally other library supporters. Determine contents in conjunction with others on the board, take or find photos as needed, and coordinate the production with Jessica d’Avanza at the library.
- Initiate and coordinate with library staff publicity and promotion for activities at the library that the Friends financially support to build attendance and promote awareness of the Friends. This might include the library electronic billboard, library and Friends’ Facebook pages and websites.
- Provide publicity for fundraising activities like the Daily Book Sale and the Annual Book Sale. Publicity efforts include articles in local newspapers, magazines and online communications, as well as posters, flyers, banners and signs throughout the town, including the high school fence, County Road banner, High School booster board, town website and signage throughout the library.
- Build partnerships with other organizations, like the Barrington Lions Club.
Relevant experience in advertising and/or public relations preferred. Excellent writing skills needed. Please submit a resume and writing sample to email@example.com.
